Legislators will be wrapping up session early tomorrow for a special event – the biannual NC/SC legislators’ basketball game. Players and supporters will hop on a bus at noon tomorrow and head down to Columbia, SC, for a 6pm tip-off.
This year’s perfectly bipartisan team of 10 includes:
- Rep. John Blust (R-Guilford)
- Sen. Andrew Brock (R-Davie)
- Rep. Pryor Gibson (D-Anson)
- Rep. Phil Haire (D-Jackson)
- Rep. Ty Harrell (D-Wake)
- Rep. Bryan Holloway (R-Stokes)
- Rep. David Lewis (R-Harnett)
- Rep. Nick Mackey (D-Mecklenburg)
- Sen. David Rouzer (R-Johnston)
- Rep. Randy Stewart (D-Nash)
But wait …there’s more...
Not to be outdone, NC’s lobbyists and staffers will also play against their SC counterparts tomorrow. They’ll play at 5pm, just before the legislative match.
That team roster is:
- William Amburn (ElectriCities)
- Fred Bone (Bone & Assoc)
- Jim Brewer (Assn. of Home and Hospice Care)
- Tony Caravano (UNC, but just got hired by Sen. Hagan)
- Courtney Crowder (Perdue’s legislative director)
- Seth Dearmin (Nexus)
- Damien Graham (TTA)
- Justin Guillory (Gov’s office)
- Joanna Hogg (LA, Allred)
- Jamal Jones (NC Hospital Assn.)
- Lindsay McCargo (LA, Holloway)
- Deano Orr (Int’l Paper Co.)
- Joseph Pell (staffer - ?)
- Dana Simpson (SmithAnderson)
Paul Stone (NC Restaurant & Lodging)
Who's paying?
The trip is being organized by Rep. Haire and his LA Sara Jane Lennard. She says no state money is being spent on the trip. Every team member is paying $30 for the uniform (printed t-shirt and jersey shorts), bus ride, and a box lunch. The balance is covered by money left over from 2007, when the game was cancelled, plus donations from lawmakers – an arrangement, she says, the ethics folks have okayed.
After the games, Lennard says they’ll be attending a reception in Columbia, and then heading back to Raleigh. They’re expected to return around midnight.
