Happy Thanksgiving!

As I write this, I'm listening to a live "Turkey Triage" call-in show with Lynn Rosette Kaspar and Mario Batali. Wow. Who knew so many birds could go so wrong?
Fun with leftovers
The N&O’s Sam Spies writes about efforts to conserve “heritage” turkeys. Not just rare, but apparently tasty, too.
Speaking of conservation, do you know which president was the first to "pardon" a turkey? The answer might surprise you.
Dome has a short list of who ought to be giving political thanks today.
One late addition to the "thankful" list: Bruton Smith, who’s finally struck a 80 million dollar incentives deal with Cabarrus County officials.
Turkey Day messages
My email inbox today is a cornucopia of Thanksgiving messages.
The NCGOP reminds us that it was a Republican - Abraham Lincoln - who made this a federal holiday.
The NAACP says we should be thankful for the sacrifices of those who've gone before us.
House Speaker Joe Hackney invokes shared loss and sacrifice, too: "While there is no doubt that we face challenges in North Carolina, we should remember how fortunate we are in many ways and be thankful that we live in a place that allows all of us to have a say in the solutions."
Even more philosophical
The Star-News has a list of quotes to make you thankful all year (except for February, which is apparently exempt. Blame Valentine's Day. )
This is the one I'll be pondering over my pumpkin pie today:
"Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” – John Milton
Pretty much says it all.
So Happy Thanksgiving - and thanks to all of you for reading.
