Clear your calendars – it looks like it’s going to be a crazy ten days around here.
Dem VP Joe Biden toured the state yesterday, ending at Meredith College in Raleigh last night. WUNC’s Dave Dewitt covered it. Update: the link is here.
GOP Veep Sarah Palin’s back this Sunday for a rally in Asheville rally Sunday. Her running-mate, John McCain, will hold a rally in Fayetteville Tuesday evening.
I’d be very surprised if we didn’t see at least one more Obama visit before Nov 4th. That because out of the eight or so states still up for grabs, we’ve got the third highest number of electoral votes (OH and FL have more, VA and MO have fewer). Obama could win the country without our 15 votes. McCain, on the other hand, pretty much has to carry North Carolina, period, especially with PA looking bluer by the day.
Can McCain win here? Absolutely. Obama’s lead here is still within the margin of error in the latest polls. But D-leaning Public Policy Polling says Obama's up by 5 points among decided voters here, and Tom Jensen doesn't think the demographics of NC undecideds will be much help to the GOP ticket. Jensen also has a really interesting post on methodology that helps explain why Obama outperformed his polls in NC’s primary.
Good reads:
- The N&O’s Rob Christensen and David Raynor look at big donors and third-party loopholes in the Dole/Hagan race for the Senate.
- Char-O’s Lisa Zagaroli reports 8th Republican Robin Hayes is still digging out from his “liberal” slam at the McCain rally in Concord last weekend.
- The Nation's Bob Moser writes about Obama’s chances in North Carolina. Granted, he’s hardly non-partisan, but then he doesn’t claim to be, either. It’s a good read – unless you’re a Perdue supporter.
- Opie and Andy are backing Obama. Dome has the details on Andy Griffith’s latest outing, courtesy of the folks at Funny or Die.
