House Speaker Pro Tem William Wainwright today issued a strongly-worded repudiation of Joe Sinsheimer's allegations that he was involved in burying legislation on behalf of political donors.

"Let me start by saying unequivocally I have done nothing legally or morally wrong."

You can read the rest here.

For the record, Sinsheimer hasn't yet offered any evidence for his allegations.

Anesthetists vs Anesthesiologists

(Now that's a spell-check death match.)

In response to Sinsheimer's call for an investigation into lawmakers' ties to nurse anesthetists, Bob Hall of Democracy NC sent out this backgrounder today, setting the record straight about who gave what to whose campaign funds, as far as we know.

Proof positive

Many of us were wondering why the Senate rushed its "Apologize for Slavery" resolution to the floor for a vote.  Turns out it may not have been an accommodation for CNN, whose truck has been parked at the Admin building this week.

Some insiders say the rush was a response to a barrage of negative emails from voters who think the state's apology is a bad idea.  For a little taste, assuming you're not easily offended, here's an actual email received today by Guilford Dem Pricey Harrison.

Wow. In my opinion, at least, that's proof in itself that the apology resolution was the right thing to do.

Two steps forward, one step back

NC legislators may be unwilling to support House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman's comprehensive smoking ban, but their constituents like the idea, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling.

The latest poll out today says two out of three North Carolinians want a ban with few exceptions.  This, as Holliman prepares to offer a revamped smoking ban bill that only affects restaurants, but would give local officials the power to enact stricter bans if they want to.  See the poll here.

She's baaaack....

Former State Sen. Fern Shubert is back on Jones Street, and even getting paid for it this time.  She's been hired as a floater LA.  She's been filling in Curtis Blackwood's office this week, which explains why she showed up with Rep. Curtis Blackwood at a Tuesday event.  Interesting.
