Some of the top applause lines from Friday night's WFU appearance.
Clinton on NC’s appeal:
“I have not spent as much time as I would like in North Carolina, but I’m thinking of spending so much time in the next several weeks that I might very well be declared a resident.”
Maya Angelou, tongue-in-cheek, on North Carolina’s many colleges and universities:
“In this state, you can fill your living room with educated people at the drop of a hat. I’m not saying they’ll be intelligent, but you can find educated people all over the place.”
Clinton responds to an audience member’s query on who she’d choose as her running mate:
“I can’t answer the question because I’m not the nominee… and both Senator Obama and I have said on several occasions that it’s presumptuous and premature. But my overriding goal is to make sure we take back the White House. And that is what I will do - whatever it takes to get that done.”(That question, by the way, came with this preface: "Hillary, I love you. I felt so sorry for you when Bill had his affair. And I know nobody wants to talk about it, but the best way to overcome it is by becoming president." Clinton elected not to respond to that comment, but the audience made its disapproval pretty clear. Watch the clip at WRAL.)
Clinton on fighting rising gas prices:
“The bottom line is we cannot be dependent on foreign oil...Anytime we get really serious (We’re not serious now. We won’t get serious till the two oilmen leave the White House. Everybody knows that.)
“Every time we look like we’re getting serious, the oil-producing countries and the oil companies say, 'you know what, the Americans may actually mean it this time. Let’s drop the price and flood the world market so they’ll forget all about this being independent.'
“Well, that's not going to happen if I'm president. In my inaugural speech, I'm going to talk about how we're going to declare energy independence.”
And Angelou’s closing admonishment to the audience:
“This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wits’ end. But she has always risen. Always risen.Comments? Drop me a line.
"Hillary Clinton will not give up on you, and all she asks is that you do not give up on her… In fact, if you help her to rise, we will all rise with her... Rise, Hillary.”
