Senate Prez Pro Tem Marc Basnight is wading into the battle over who'll succeed outgoing Majority Leader Tony Rand. This letter went out today to Senate Democrats.
November 6, 2009
Dear Members of the Democratic Caucus:
Over the past few days, I have thought a great deal about the future of our caucus and our state. North Carolina is at a critical juncture and our challenges are great.
For our state to endure these difficult economic times, we need to focus all of our energies and efforts on creating jobs, improving education and health care, and giving everyone in North Carolina a chance at success. Martin Nesbitt has fought for these important priorities throughout his decades of public service. He has worked tirelessly to bring jobs, industry, and economic opportunity not only to the mountains, but to all communities in our state. He has worked with compassion, commitment and integrity on behalf of all North Carolina’s families.
I hope you will join me in supporting Martin’s candidacy for Majority Leader and I know that should he be elected, he will work hard every day to help keep our state moving forward with better schools, better health care and a stronger economy.
Sincerely,
Marc Basnight
Well, I guess that answers the Clodfelter/Nesbitt question. Nesbitt's definitely the most Rand-like character in the chamber, but some thought the Buncombe Dem might be too liberal for Basnight. Apparently not - though I wouldn't be surprised to see Clodfelter taking over Rand's Rules chairmanship next year, either.
Comments? Drop me a line.
