Fri 12:05 am: House Budget Passes

Neither the seven-hour debate nor the towering stack of floor amendments made much difference in the end. The House passed the budget bill strictly along party lines - all Dems for, all Reps against, no more big surprises beyond Medicaid and crossover.
Of course, this is just the opening salvo in a long, tough battle. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it's likely to get a thorough working-over (in a Sopranos kind of way). Then back again, and so forth.
Still, Speaker Joe Hackney said tonight he thinks "our budget process produced the productive clash of ideas that I talked about on opening day, where everyone contributes." After 90 amendments in Approps, and more on the floor, that's hard to argue with.
More recaps tomorrow.
