Stanly Republican Representative David Almond has submitted his resignation to the House Speaker's office.
Almond issued this written statement:
A complaint has been filed against me with the Speaker. I intend to defend myself against these charges in whatever forum may be appropriate.
In the meantime, I have concluded that it is in the best interest of my family and the constituents of my district to resign from the General Assembly.
I thank the people of my district for the privilege of serving them and the State of North Carolina.
Neither Almond nor House GOP leader Skip Stam offered any further reason for Almond's departure.
Stam referred to allegations of "serious improper behavior" last night, but was even more vague today, though he conceded that "The leaders of the caucus asked [Almond] to resign if the allegations were true."
More as I get it.
