John McCain rolled into Charlotte today to pick up a few endorsements and a lot of checks. McCain's Queen City fundraiser was expected to generate at least 150 thousand dollars for his campaign. He also garnered the endorsement of junior Senator Richard Burr, who issued this statement lavishly praising McCain's credentials.
Burr's announcement is a little surprising -- a year and a half out, it's hard to tell who'll still be in the game by the time the GOP convention rolls around. Senior Senator Elizabeth Dole's office says she isn't ready to endorse anyone yet. Who knows - maybe Burr's hoping for a job interview.
Then again, maybe it's in the water. Yesterday, McCain received endorsements from former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot and former state GOP Chairman Ferrell Blount, both of whom he promptly named to his steering committee. They've got their work cut out for them: in the most recent NC poll, McCain is at 17% to Rudy Giuliani's 32%.
Dems, too
According to the N&O, all seven of NC's Congressional Dems are backing the home team, John Edwards. Congressman David Price said yesterday they're endorsing Edwards because "we know his character, leadership ability and commitment to our country." Of course, it's also a savvy way to stay out of the Obama-Clinton rivalry that's been making it difficult for South Carolina Dems to decide who's coming to dinner.
Wii want to compute
An NC State Professor has made a small supercomputer out of 8 Sony Playstation 3s. Dr. Frank Mueller says his PS3 academic computing cluster is the first of its kind - and at $5000, it's a whole lot cheaper than a regular supercomputer. Wii fans, take heart - Mueller says you could probably cluster any of the new high-powered gaming systems, as long as they run Linux. Very cool.
