The IBMAs Are 'Living In Raleigh Now'

Chatham County Line wrote "Living In Raleigh Now" to commemorate the International Bluegrass Music Festival's move from Nashville.

The world's premier bluegrass music event is all this week in Raleigh. The International Bluegrass Music Association's annual gathering and Festival used to be in Nashville but moved to Raleigh a year ago.  

Tens of thousands of people attended last year and city officials say visitors spent more than $10 million on food, hotels and entertainment.    

The organization has since decided to put down roots and committed to holding the event in Raleigh for the next six years.

Many people know Dom Flemons as one-third of the original membership of groundbreaking revivalist stringband Carolina Chocolate Drops. Indeed, with the CCDs, Flemons achieved international acclaim and earned award nominations from organizations like the Americana Music Association and the Grammys. But, before the Chocolate Drops made their debut, he was a performing songster and songwriter, covering the entire scope of what constitutes American folk and roots music — not just the stringband, Carolina-based stuff that would eventually make him folk-famous.

Bombadil, a trio from Durham, NC, are tonight's headliners for Back Porch Music On The Lawn.  The band, whose name comes from a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," is kicking-off a late summer East Coast and Midwest tour in their "hometown."

WATCH: 10-Time Grammy Winner Bobby Hicks Performs In-Studio

Bobby Hicks had no intention of playing fiddle as a kid. He was playing mandolin in a band with his brothers when one of them asked for some help.

"My brother had a friend he wanted in the band, but he couldn't play anything," said Hicks. "So he talked me into teaching him to play the mandolin, and then they fired me."

It was to all our benefit.

The Back Porch Music on the Lawn concert series starts tonight with Southern Culture on the Skids.
