WUNC Overall Excellence Entry 2013 Murrow Awards
Rundown for WUNC-FM’s Overall Excellence Entry
This entry contains examples of the best work of WUNC-FM. Some of the stories are excerpted in order to meet the category’s time limit.
0:00-4:46 Coverage of the DNC in Charlotte
Across the country, the election was one of the biggest stories of the year and North Carolina was no different. With its newfound swing state status, North Carolina was a big draw for national campaigns and the Democrats brought their national convention to Charlotte. While NPR provided our listeners coverage of what was happening inside the convention arena, WUNC focused on what the convention meant for North Carolina, and on the people who made it possible- like former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt.
4:46-6:37 Election coverage
WUNC covered the presidential campaign in North Carolina and the race for the Governor’s mansion including a series of three debates.
6:37-10:09 John Edwards Trial coverage
The other big political story in North Carolina last year centered on a former politician- John Edwards. WUNC provided daily coverage of his federal trial in Greensboro on campaign finance charges.
10:09-12:29 Economic coverage
While politicians vied for their votes, many North Carolinians continued to struggle through economic hardship in 2012. WUNC continued to cover the affects of the Great Recession.
12:29-14:20 Education coverage
WUNC undertook a special education project in 2012 called the American Graduate Series. It looked at continuing barriers to high school graduation, and the people trying to change that.
14:20-17:35 Fracking coverage
Another hot topic in North Carolina last year was fracking, or hydraulic fracturing for natural gas. Geologists estimate sizeable amounts of natural gas in North Carolina. Politicians and residents debated how and whether to drill for it.
17:35-20:25 Beyond the headlines
WUNC regularly goes beyond the headlines to look at how the stories of the day are affecting people in different communities. Such was the case with this story looking at the impact of local terrorism trials on the Muslim community in Raleigh.
20:25-24:17 Arts & Culture coverage
WUNC also reports on arts and culture in North Carolina. And 2012 brought the loss of perhaps the state’s most notable cultural icon- Andy Griffith.
You can find the full version of any of these stories here. We’ll wrap up with our entry in the newscast category. This is our local 6:06 A-M newscast from July 11, 2012. Thanks for listening.
