Street Party Kicks Off DNC Week

Dr. Scott Poppen
Leoneda Inge

Downtown Charlotte was packed yesterday with locals and thousands of guests in town for the Democratic National Convention.

The Johnson C. Smith University Marching Band kicked off the massive Carolina Fest street party. Dawne McCain lives in Charlotte. She enjoyed all the foot traffic coming by her jewelry booth during the festival.

McCain says,  "I'm excited, it's everywhere. It’s all over. And it's not just contained to this one area. I live over in south Charlotte it's all over there. It's everywhere – the feeling, the energy. I think Charlotte has totally bought into it."

The Democratic National Convention officially kicks off today. Governor Bev Perdue is scheduled to speak.

Leoneda Inge is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Leoneda has been a radio journalist for more than 30 years, spending most of her career at WUNC as the Race and Southern Culture reporter.
