State Board Of Elections Fields Complaints About Americans For Prosperity Mailings

The state Board of Elections has received thousands of calls about incorrect voter registration information sent out by the state chapter of Americans For Prosperity, a national conservative group.

The state Board of Elections Public Information Officer, Josh Lawson, said his office has been receiving calls from across the state about the letters. They include official voter registration forms, along with a page that includes incorrect information about when and where to turn them in. Lawson said he's fielded calls from people whose dead spouses were sent the forms, among others.

"We even had an individual receive one and call our office 'cause it was for her cat," said Lawson.

Worst of all, said Lawson, the mailings got the deadline for voter registration wrong. The correct date is October 10th. The head of the state Democratic Party suggests the letters were an attempt to create voter fraud charges, while an AFP news release says the program has resulted in thousands of newly registered voters.
