ANNOUNCER COPY: Coming up… Don’t be intimidated by one of the most rewarding music genres in American history. Sound Opinions presents the “Rock Fan’s Guide to Jazz.”
• Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot discuss Norway’s announcement that it will shut down its FM band. This makes Norway the first country to completely do away with FM radio. The move is intended to save money and allow a full transition to digital radio, which Norway argues will give listeners "access to more diverse and pluralistic radio content and enjoy better sound quality and new functionality."
• In other global music news, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry has released its 2015 report “Recording Industry In Numbers.” The report shares interesting information on music sales and consumption in such places as Germany, South Korea and Brazil, China, where overall sales finally grew 5.6%. China still ranks relatively low due to rampant music piracy.
Sound Opinions recognizes that not everyone can easily get into jazz, and so it presents “The Rock Fan’s Guide to Jazz.” This should help musical laypeople and novices to appreciate this rewarding American art form. Jim and Greg’s guide is jazz writer John Corbett. He recommends works by Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman and more.
