Raleigh Voters Will Choose New Mayor

Voters in Raleigh will help choose a new mayor at the polls tomorrow.

Jessica Jones: Raleigh's current mayor, Charles Meeker, is stepping down after five terms in office. A pharmacist named Nancy McFarlane who's a member of the city council has Meeker's official stamp of approval. She's also an entrepreneur who runs a company that serves clients with chronic illnesses. McFarlane is especially focused on growth and development issues. The other businesswoman in the race is Billie Redmond. She's a real estate executive and community volunteer who's running for elected office for the first time. If elected, Redmond plans to focus on job growth in Raleigh. The third candidate vying to become Raleigh's next mayor is a physician named Randall Williams. He's an ob-gyn who's known for humanitarian work in Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti. Williams says he'd like to keep taxes low and pursue pro-business policies.

Jessica Jones covers both the legislature in Raleigh and politics across the state. Before her current assignment, Jessica was given the responsibility to open up WUNC's first Greensboro Bureau at the Triad Stage in 2009. She's a seasoned public radio reporter who's covered everything from education to immigration, and she's a regular contributor to NPR's news programs. Jessica started her career in journalism in Egypt, where she freelanced for international print and radio outlets. After stints in Washington, D.C. with Voice of America and NPR, Jessica joined the staff of WUNC in 1999. She is a graduate of Yale University.
