NC Military Bases Brace For Teacher Furloughs

Teachers at North Carolina's military bases are preparing for up to five furlough days due to cuts from the sequester
Fort Bragg

Teachers at North Carolina's military bases are preparing for up to five furlough days due to cuts from the sequester.

The Department of Defense says instructors and other nine-month employees can expect mandatory days off after the next school year starts.  Marilee Fitzgerald is the director of the Department of Defense Education Activity, which oversees schools at military bases.

"The up-to-five-days at the school level will occur not before September.  So for our parents, school is going to open on time and I would follow their school calendars that are posted on each school's website," says Marilee Fitzgerald, director of the Department of Defense Education Activity, which oversees schools at military bases.

"And the furlough days will be taken largely, and almost exclusively, in the month of September."

Fitzgerald says year-round employees such as administrators will have up to 11 furlough days.  Each school is responsible for creating a schedule that includes furlough days.

"What you will see now is our principals working with our teachers, our communities, our families and our command to select the days that provide the least disruption to the education program," Fitzgerald says.

"My sense is they all have some general idea of what those days are and they're just now coordinating that."

Defense officials say they expect to save $23 million from faculty and staff furloughs.
