Lawmakers Remember The Civil Rights Act

It was a busy day at the legislature today.  Lawmakers made progress on a number of issues. In the House, lawmakers unanimously approved a bill that supports the governor's vision to manage Medicaid using an accountable care model.

On the Senate floor, Democratic Senator Floyd McKissick marked the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson 50 years ago today. McKissick credited protesters, the media who covered them, and politicians who were committed to equal rights.

Lawmakers made progress on a number of issues and remembered the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

"And the courage that was shown by President Johnson and the bipartisan leadership of that era- Republicans and Democrats alike that came together. And they didn't take a poll on public opinion to tell them where to come out," said McKissick.

Meanwhile, budget writers came to an agreement on Medicaid spending levels and will continue negotiations into next week.
