Four Concerts Scheduled In Expanded, Larger Back Porch Music Series In Durham
The Celtic powerhouse band Solas will kick off the 2013 Back Porch Music concert series in Durham. Bluegrass, local blues, and much more will be a part of the four Back Porch concerts scheduled between May and October.
The crowds at the annual Back Porch Music concerts On The Lawn at American Tobacco Campus in Durham have grown so much that "the lawn" can no longer contain the anticipated numbers. This spring and summer the concerts will be in a much bigger space and have a more festival like feel.
The music will be accompanied by food trucks, beer tents, kids games, zip line, and a corn hole pit. The concerts will move from their previous home in the center court of American Tobacco. The new location is in grassy park called Diamond View Park on Blackwell Street next to DPAC and behind the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The area will be fenced in with stage and lights set up along Blackwell Street. (For directions, see the Google Map at the bottom of this page.)
Please note: Picnics & coolers are okay, but no alcohol, please.
The concert series also has a new name: The Center Stage Back Porch Music Series. Here's the line up:
- Friday May 17 6-9 pm
Solas and Kenny Roby -- easily one of the most popular Irish touring bands today. They playfully blend Celtic traditions with a more global sound. Kenny Roby opens.
- Friday June 7 6-9 pm - Canceled due to rain
Dance Party with Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band and Ironing Board Sam. It's a mix of the infectiously funky Booty Band alongside Piedmont Blues Legend and Music Maker artist Ironing Board Sam and his band.
- Friday September 20 6-9 pm
Yep Roc Records Showcase with Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones and the Aoife O'Donovan Band. Dave Alvin is a legendary songwriter who's perhaps best known for his work with X and the Blasters. Aoife O'Donovan is a rising star, frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion. Her debut record comes out in June. Both artists record for Yep Roc Records -- one of the hot independent labels in North Carolina.
- Friday October 4 6-9 pm
Special Double Bill with bluegrass legends Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and up and comers Mipso. Hot on the heels of IBMA Raleigh we bring one of the best bluegrass bands touring today to Center Stage. They are joined by the band Mipso, a young acoustic quartet out of Chapel Hill that's been making waves.
