Beginning Monday, You'll Hear Things On The Radio At Slightly Different Times

the WUNC audio board with a paper version of the new NPR clock
Carol Jackson

Beginning Monday, WUNC is changing its newscasts in Morning Edition.  This means more news about North Carolina throughout the morning hours.  You'll now hear newscasts at :01, :19, :31 and :42 minutes past each hour.

This does mean that some of the sounds that mark your morning routine are shifting slightly - so please watch that clock.

This is part of a larger change in all the NPR newsmagazine programs.

As you might imagine, everything that you hear on WUNC is run by the clock. We synchronize our clocks with NPR, and strive to make sure each minute of the day is meaningful.

Instead of one, long newscast at the top and bottom of the hour during Morning Edition - WUNC will be bringing you newscasts throughout the hour.

These clocks determine things like when it's time for the NPR newscast to begin or when Eric Hodge brings you North Carolina news or the latest weather. These clocks have been unchanged for decades and were ready for an update.

NPR staff worked closely with stations like WUNC to figure out what changes would make the most sense.

Connie Walker, WUNC's President and General Manager had a leadership role in this project.  She and other station leaders went through all of NPR's programs minute by minute.

"It was incredibly thorough," says Walker.  "We've long felt a need to make more room for breaking news and for those in-depth stories that cause driveway moments. We spent a lot of time working on how to do all that but still leave time for things like weather, underwriting and state news."

The most obvious change you'll hear is in the morning newscasts.  Instead of one, long newscast at the top and bottom of the hour during Morning Edition - WUNC will be bringing you newscasts throughout the hour.

Other changes are much more subtle and you may not notice them at all. One thing that won't change is our commitment to finding and telling interesting, in-depth stories.

But again, heads up! Do you always leave for work when something specific happens on the radio? Keep an eye on your home clock for the next week to make sure you're not late.
