Laura Leslie is WUNC's Capitol reporter, covering state politics and government. She came to WUNC from California, where she was assistant editor at the national show Weekend America. Prior to that, Laura was a Capitol reporter for KXJZ in Sacramento, where her team won an award from the California Associated Press for coverage of the California recall. She started out in radio in 1994 at WFIU in Bloomington, Indiana. She's done freelance reporting for NPR, Reuters, KQED, and the California Foundation for community health reporting.
Before moving into journalism, Laura worked as a writer and editor for several online education start-ups. She has a Masters in English from Indiana University, and a BA from Stetson University.
Laura is president of Capitolbeat, the national association of statehouse reporters and editors. She also writes the blog Isaac Hunter's Tavern.
