Interim Program Director
Connie Walker is currently the Interim Program Director at WUNC. Before stepping into this role in July 2008, Connie was News Director. She started working at WUNC in April of 2005. The program director oversees all of the stations local production, including the news department, The State of Things, The Story, People's Pharmacy, Back Porch Music and North Carolina Voices series projects. If you have a complaint about our local programming, she is the one to pester.
Connie previously worked at Wisconsin Public Radio for 17 years. She was a reporter, an on-air host, and then News Director of the statewide network. She was also a fill-in talk show host. In addition, Connie is the past president of Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, a national organization that sponsors conferences and training for public radio journalists.
Connie began her career working for several commercial radio stations in Wisconsin. She landed her first radio job at the age of 16. That was simply typing up ad copy, but she was on the air within a year. Connie complained that the local sports announcer was only covering boy's basketball at a local high school, so she made her debut doing quarterly reports on the girl's team. Fortunately, no one saved any recordings of this.
Connie's work has been recognized by numerous journalism organizations, including PRNDI, The Associated Press, the Milwaukee Press Club, The Radio and Television News Directors Association and the Northwest Broadcast News Association.
