WakeMed And UNC Hospitals Call A Truce

WakeMed Hospital has withdrawn its takeover bid of UNC-owned Rex Healthcare. The cross-town rivals are putting an end to their public battle that escalated when WakeMed issued an unsuccessful bid to buy Rex last year for 750 million dollars. The announcement comes after state lawmakers helped broker an agreement between the two institutions' officials. Bill Atkinson is the CEO of WakeMed.

Syria’s Revolution and Egypt’s Elections

The United Nations estimates that 9,000 people have died in Syria since the revolution began in March of 2011 and the conflict spilled into Lebanon this week. Consider that it took a month for Tunisia to depose its ruler and only 18 days for Egypt to get rid of Hosni Mubarak, yet Syria’s President, Bashar Assad, shows no signs of stepping down.

Hickory Man With Pending Innocence Review Released On Parole

A Hickory man has been released from prison as he continues seeking to prove his innocence in a 1987 rape case.

Gurnal Scott: Willie James Grimes served more then two decades in prison for rape and kidnapping. He walked out of prison this morning on parole..but his conviction still follows him. He had to register with the state as a sex offender. The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission ruled last month that a review of Grimes' case is warranted. His attorney Christine Mumma says they discovered evidence that had been overlooked.

Meet Angeline Echeverría

Angeline Echeverría grew up the daughter of two Cuban immigrants, but it wasn't until she came to the South that she truly learned about racism. Her exposure to racial injustice led her to a life of social activism that has taken her to Arkansas, Costa Rica and New York. In April, she became the executive director of the Latino advocacy organization El Pueblo in North Carolina.
