As Politicians Talk Tightening Gun Laws, Charlotte Gun Store Sells Like It's The Holidays

In the weeks after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School this past December, President Obama began talking about tightening gun control – and firearm sales boomed. Larry Hyatt runs Hyatt Guns in Charlotte, N.C., and he says that he’s seeing a growing demand for "high capacity" guns and that he’s selling as much as he would over Christmas. He stocks 7,000 guns in his store, making it one of the biggest in the country. He tells host Dick Gordon about the one thing he’d like to see changed in Washington.

North Carolina Free Health Clinics In Flux

North Carolina has one of the best networks of free clinics in the country.  Support from funders like the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation has helped take care of some of the state’s neediest patients; those who don’t qualify for Medicare of Medicaid.  Warren County – northeast of Raleigh – is home to one of the busiest free clinics in North Carolina.  But funding cuts have resulted in less service at a crucial time in the nation’s health care fight.

Two Public Hearings Scheduled For Alcoa’s Yadkin Dam Operations

Two public hearings are scheduled this week in the ongoing fight over whether Alcoa should be allowed to continue operating dams on the Yadkin River. 

The hydroelectric dams are about 60 miles south of the Triad, and they powered Alcoa’s aluminum plant in Badin for decades. The factory is now closed, but Alcoa is seeking another 50-year federal license to operate the dams and sell the electricity on the open market.

Eight Inmates File Lawsuit Over Alleged Abuse At Central Prison

Advocates have filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of some state prison inmates. The eight inmates at Central Prison in Raleigh wrote letters to attorneys with the state's Prisoner Legal Services agency saying officers beat them while they were restrained.

Elizabeth City Museum Creates Exhibit Entirely Of Postcards

People often turn to history books to learn about bygone eras, but a new exhibit at the Museum of the Albemarle showcases the value of postcards important cultural documents.  The exhibit contains old and new postcards that depict a variety of coastal North Carolina scenes: people on beaches, coastal transportation, architecture, and more. Some of the cards have even been altered to be viewed in 3-D. (Glasses are provided.)

North Carolina Black Voter Turnout Tops in US

NCCU students Johnae Stoutamire and Lateria Watts text friends after voting for the first time in the 2012 presidential election.

National numbers from the US Census Bureau this week showed that in 2012, black voter turn-out exceeded that for whites, for the first time.  The story was the same in North Carolina.  Nationally – about 66% of eligible blacks voted in the November 2012 election.  In North Carolina – just over 80% of blacks voted – the highest voter turnout in any state.

Mothers Rally To Fight Gun Violence

Mothers across North Carolina are marching and speaking out at events tomorrow to raise awareness of how gun violence affects families. Joslyn Simms, who lost her son Rayburn to gun violence eight years ago this month, will be speaking at tomorrow's rally in Durham.
