Those are the narrow channels of waves that can pull swimmers dangerously far offshore. Signs along North Carolina’s coastline advise visitors to ‘Break the Grip of the Rip.’</p><p>Spencer Rogers is with the governmental research organization <a href="http://www.ncseagrant.org/" target="_blank">North Carolina Sea Grant</a>.
