17 Protesters Arrested At General Assembly

Police at the General Assembly in Raleigh arrested 17 protesters Monday evening who were protesting inside the building.

The group, which included state NAACP head Rev. William Barber, was speaking out against a series of Republican-led bills that have been passed recently. Barber says that includes a measure that would require residents to bring photo identification with them to the polls.

Lawmakers in the state House have passed a bill that would require residents to present photo identification at the polls.

The measure passed 81-36. The outcome wasn’t surprising to opponents of the measure, who’ve faced an uphill battle with the bill’s Republican sponsors.

State House members passed a GOP-backed bill that would require state residents show a photo ID before being allowed to vote. The bill, previously approved by three legislative committees, allows several forms of identification to verify voters. Democrats and civil rights groups who oppose the bill say new requirements amount to attempts at voter suppression.

Republican David Lewis, chair of the House Elections Committee, says the bill ensures fairness.

Republican leaders in the state House have unveiled details of their long-awaited Voter ID bill.

The measure would require most North Carolinians to bring photo identification with them to the polls, beginning in 2016. It would allow residents to use a number of different kinds of IDs in order to vote.
Republican Speaker of the House Thom Tillis told a news conference earlier today that weeks of discussions have gone into creating this bill.

Elections and voting experts testified before the state House Elections Committee Wednesday, just one day after a public hearing that lasted hours. Republican leaders have said they plan to introduce a bill that would require voters to present photo IDs at the polls. They say it would help fight voter fraud. But Bob Hall of Democracy North Carolina says voter fraud isn't a problem in North Carolina. He told lawmakers if it is, then they should investigate and document it.

State senators passed the bill as expected last night, but not before more than an hour of spirited debate. Republican Buck Newton told lawmakers requiring voters to bring ID with them to the polls will help combat instances of fraud.
