Edmisten Giving Papers To UNC

Rufus Edmisten

Rufus Edmisten is donating his papers to UNC-Chapel Hill. Edmisten worked for Senator Sam Ervin on the Senate Watergate Committee.

Dave DeWitt: The shining star of the collection Edmisten is donating is the subpoena he served to then-President Richard Nixon. In July 1973, Edmisten delivered the subpoena, after it became known that Nixon recorded conversations in the White House.

In an interview with the State of Things in 2006, Edmisten remembers Nixon's actions that eventually led to his resignation.

Vice President Biden Brings Campaign To Durham

Vice President Joe Biden was in Durham today on the campaign trail. His visit comes just one day after Republican Mitt Romney and his vice presidential pick visited North Carolina. Biden told a cheering crowd that he and President Obama want to do everything they can to support the middle class. But he says Ryan's budget plan, adopted by the U-S House, supports wealthy people by giving them tax breaks and cuts programs for the poor.

Dave DeWitt: In 2008, the presidential race in North Carolina came down to 4-tenths of a percentage point. The race in 2012 looks like it could be just as close, and both candidates are likely to spend a lot of time here in the next few months.

Legislators Looking At Puppy Mills

Recent puppy mill raids in Brunswick and Jones Counties have prompted more discussion at the General Assembly about the need for legislation to regulate commercial breeders. About half of all states have such measures in place. Mondy Lamb from the the SPCA of Wake County says large breeding operations are escaping through a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act. She says North Carolina regulates every other entity that houses large numbers of dogs.

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Walter Dalton held a Town Hall meeting this morning in Winston-Salem.

Jeff Tiberii: The current Lieutenant Governor answered questions from a group of about 30 people at a local community college. Dalton responded to audience members on issues of transportation, education and was repeatedly asked about taxes and if he would extend a sales tax increase, should he be elected to office; a position he has not taken a definitive stance on.
