Michelle Obama Campaigns In North Carolina

First Lady Michelle Obama is at a campaign fundraiser in Raleigh this afternoon. Earlier today she made a stop in Greensboro.

Jeff Tiberii: Speaking in front of nearly 23-hundred, mostly standing, people at UNC-Greensboro, the First Lady urged Triad voters to give a few hours of their time this month. The “It Takes One” effort was announced last week as the campaign tries to mobilize voters for November’s election. Obama also told the audience how they can respond when others ask what President Obama has done since he took office.

Cary Looking Into Removing Red Light Cameras

The red-light camera program at select intersections in Cary could be eliminated over multiple concerns, among them complaints the system is wrongfully issuing citations. The system is operated by the company Redflex. It collects nearly 90-percent of the revenue from traffic violations captured by the cameras. Town Manager Ben Shivar says local officials have have been less than impressed by the company's performance.

Durham Smoking Ordinance Takes Effect Tomorrow

Beginning tomorrow, a Durham city ordinance will officially prohibit smoking on city and county grounds both inside and outside. County commissioners passed the ordinance in February. Eric Nickens is a spokesman for the Durham County Health Department.

Transit Money Coming To NC

North Carolina will get about $14 million of the nearly $800 million the federal government is giving out to update transit systems across the country. The grants are part of the US Department of Transportation's "State of Good Repair and Bus Livability" effort.

DOT Secretary Ray Lahood says the grants will have a transformative effect.

Muslim Community Reacts to Local Terrorism Trials

Raleigh's Muslim community is caught between two uncomfortably close to home criminal trials. The dust has finally settled around the case of the so-called Raleigh 7. The final member of that gang was convicted last month for conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and kill people overseas.  Now, lawyers are preparing for a related case that begins this November. It involves a highly respected Muslim woman from Raleigh.

Forest Wins Nomination for Lieutenant Governor

In the Republican run-off election for Lieutenant Governor on Tuesday Dan Forest beat Tony Gurley.

Jeff Tiberii: Forest received nearly 68-percent of the vote in a second primary that had low turnout at the polls. Forest is the son of Sue Myrick, the retiring 9-term Congresswoman and former mayor of Charlotte. He has never held political office but easily beat Tony Gurley who has 10 years experience on the Wake County board of Commissioners. Forest says his attention now shifts toward his November opponent, Democrat Linda Coleman.
