Live Stream Troubleshooting
What audio is available on WUNC.ORG?
WUNC.ORG offers Internet streams of our FM live broadcasts and On Demand archives of our broadcast programming. These On Demand archives are available as individual downloads or podcasts. See our program archives for downloads (right click + save as to your computer) and see this information for podcasts.
Occasionally we do not have Internet broadcast rights to a program and must stop the stream temporarily or present alternative programming.
National Public Radio news programs are archived at NPR's website.
What is an mp3 file? How do I listen to mp3 streams?
mp3 is a widely popular audio format that is supported by a number of internet audio players, including iTunes, Real Audio Player, Windows Media Player and dozens of others. Since mp3 is the the most widely available, we make our archives available in mp3 format and our streams available in mp3 as well as Real Audio compatible and Windows Media. These options should work well for most people.
In addition to a computer with a sound card and speakers or headphones, you need an Internet connection (dial-up modem, DSL, cable modem or local area network) and audio player software. One player that can help you experience WUNC online is iTunes. You can find WUNC listed in the radio section and in their podcast library. Also, if you have an iPod you can easily move files you download from wunc.org onto your player with iTunes.
What do I need to listen to On Demand archived audio?
Most WUNC.ORG On Demand audio plays without any external player software. You need Flash version 8 or newer installed; the program comes standard on most computers. If you need Flash, you can download it here. To listen to On Demand audio you have downloaded, you'll need a mp3 player. There are many available and a Google search is a good place to start.
Why does the sound cut out or skip?
While there can be several reasons for this ranging from a general internet slowdown to problems with your Internet Service Provider, often this is caused by data not arriving fast enough to your computer to keep the sound flowing. Nearly all computer audio players have an option to increase the "buffer" size of data. The buffer determines how much data (audio) must arrive before the sound starts playing. If you are getting skips and your buffer is set to a low or medium setting, try increasing the buffer size. In most cases that will great improve or solve the problem.
