CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina Public Radio/WUNC-FM, a service of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won six Green Eyeshade awards, twice as many as any other radio station in this regional contest. The station received first place awards for documentary and continuing coverage, second and third place for feature reporting and third place for spot news and sports reporting. Broadcast, print and online journalists in 11 southeastern states - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia - compete in this contest, which is sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
The documentary award went to Emily Hanford, Deborah George, Alison Jones and Benjamin Shapiro for "Daily Lessons," part of the "Studying High School" series on "North Carolina Voices," a program that explores large-scale, complex issues that deeply touch the lives of North Carolinians. Rusty Jacobs, Leoneda Inge and Jessica Jones took first place for their continuing coverage of sexual assault charges against members of the Duke lacrosse team, who were eventually declared innocent.
Rose Hoban won a second place award for her feature on grief counseling offered by the Veterans' Administration for families of war casualties and third place in sports reporting for a story about surfers who volunteered to help people with spinal cord injuries learn to surf. Third place in features reporting went to Laura Leslie for "9/11 Remembrance." The station's coverage of a fire at a hazardous waste plant in Apex garnered a third place award in spot news for Lorne Matalon, Jessica Jones, Connie Walker and Catherine Brand.
"We're gratified to be recognized for work that ranges from hard news like the Apex chemical fire and the Duke lacrosse case to work that touches the heart like stories about disabled surfers and military families coping with loss," said news director Connie Walker.
The newest awards were presented May 5, 2007, at a banquet in Nashville, Tenn. A total of 16 awards were presented to in the radio division to journalists from eight radio news outlets. The Green Eyeshade awards come in addition to 19 other regional and national awards for excellence in broadcasting and news reporting that WUNC-FM has received so far in 2007 for reports aired during 2006.
